Kubota Corp developed an industrial-use diesel engine that complies with Interim Tier 4/Stage III B emissions regulations.
By optimizing the control of fuel injection, etc, Kubota improved output and reduced noise while reducing the amount of particulate matter (PM) emissions to lower than the regulated amount. The company will start volume production of the diesel engine in October 2011, planning to use it for the company's farm and construction machinery and to offer it as an OEM product.





This time, Kubota achieved a compatibility with Interim Tier 4/Stage III B emissions regulations, which are for diesel engines whose outputs range from 56 to 130kW. The regulations include an article that demands to reduce PM emissions to 1/10 that of the current regulations. And they will become effective in Japan, the US and Europe in 2012.



With the industrial-use water-cooled diesel engine having a displacement of 3.8L, Kubota obtained a certification from the California Environmental Protection Agency Air Resources Board (CARB). This is the first time in the world that a diesel engine with a displacement of 4L or less has obtained the certification. The company has already acquired the certification with its diesel engine having a displacement of 6.1L.



To make the engine compatible with the new regulations, Kubota employed (1) the "Common-rail System," which enables to minutely control the fuel injection, (2) the "Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System," which prevents the generation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by reabsorbing part of exhaust gas and lowering combustion temperature and (3) the "Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)," which collects the particulate matters of exhaust gas. As a result, the company achieved the compatibility with the regulations while keeping the small size of its existing engine.
