Definition and Usage

The id attribute is a unique identification for a HTML element.

The id attribute is often used with CSS or JavaScript (using the HTML DOM) to style or change the HTML element with the specified unique id.

The id must be unique within the HTML document, this means that you can only use the id once on a page, but re-use it on another page.

Alone, the id attribute does not affect the display style of the element.

Syntax

<element id="id">Some text or element</element>
OR
<element id="id" />

Parameter Description
id Required. The identifier of the element.

Naming rules:

  • Must begin with a letter A-Z or a-z
  • Can be followed by: letters (A-Za-z), digits (0-9), hyphens ("-"), underscores ("_"), colons (":"), and periods (".")
  • Values are case-sensitive
element Required. The HTML element using the id.

The id attribute can be used on almost all HTML elements.

Exceptions:

  • base
  • head
  • html
  • meta
  • param
  • script
  • style
  • title

W3C: The "W3C" column indicates whether or not the attribute is defined in the W3C HTML/XHTML recommendation.
