Solar Frontier K.K. announced that it started full production at the Kunitomi Plant, which the company built in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, for production of photovoltaic (PV) batteries, in July 2011.
The production capacity of the plant is 900MW (900,000kW) per year. Combined with its existing plant, Solar Frontier is now producing PV batteries at a pace of 1GW (1 million kilowatts) per year.

In the past, the Kunitomi Plant was Hitachi Plasma Display Ltd's plant. In September 2009, it was transferred from Hitachi Ltd to Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K. and Showa Shell Solar K.K. (current Solar Frontier). Production at the plant was started 16 months after the decision of the transfer was made, and full production started five months after the first production.

Solar Frontier and the Hitachi Group including Hitachi Consumer Marketing Inc cooperate in selling PV panels in Japan. The interests of the Hitachi Group, which does not have panels but wants to sell its peripheral systems such as power conditioners, coincided with the interests of Solar Frontier, which does not have peripheral systems or sales channels to residences.
