The World is a man-made archipelago of 300 islands constructed in the shape of a world map. It can be also seen from space. The overall development cost of The World was estimated as 14 billion USD. The prices of individual islands range between 15 and 50 million USD.


The World is an artificial archipelago of various small islands constructed in the rough shape of a map of the landmasses of the Earth, located 4 km (2.5 mi) off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.The World islands are composed mainly of sand dredged from Dubai's shallow coastal waters, and are one of several artificial island developments in Dubai. The World's developer is Nakheel Properties, and the project was originally conceived by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai.

Building the world

In order to develop the islands, all the land needs to be reclaimed via pumps and pipes and then bulldozers shift the sand to make the land. Still seems like a crazy plan to think up.

This group of islands is already under construction. One day, I watched from the hotel as the dredgers pulled sand up from the bottom of the Gulf to create new islands.
