ISLAMABAD: Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has taken charge as the Chief Justice of Pakistan on early Sunday, Geo news reported.

In a statement released by Supreme Court of Pakistan, it is said that justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has taken charge as the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

CJP has approved the roster of Supreme Court right after taking charge following which, the roster has been issued, statement added.

According to roster, a five-member bench in Principle Seat in Islamabad has been formed while a Shariat Appellate Bench has also been formed in Islamabad.

Two benches at Peshawar Registry while two more benches at Lahore Registry and Quetta Registry have been formed, the roster said.

According to the list of the cases in Supreme Court, Shariat petitions and appeals have been placed in the list of Shariat Appellate Bench for Monday’s proceedings.

As per the cause list, mostly criminal and some civil cases have been fixed before the court. Similarly criminal Shariat petitions and appeals have also been fixed before the Shariat Appellate Bench, at the principal seat, Islamabad.

The purpose is to dispose of criminal matters, especially the pending cases of convicts and undertrail prisoners, so as to grant relief to prisoners, who are languishing in jail and are anxiously awaiting decisions of the Supreme Court in their pending cases, sources told Geo news.

Registrar SC Doctor Faqeer Hussain told Geo news that most cases placed for hearings on Monday are related to freedom of citizens and others.
