The Iraq war five years later

It is now five years since the beginning of the war in Iraq. The death toll is now nearing an astonishing four thousand. This comes nearly three years after the death toll hit two thousand on October 26, 2005. According to counts now, there were three thousand nine hundred and ninety two American soldiers killed in Iraq since the war began on March 19, 2003.

The war began when President Bush wanted to invade Iraq on the intelligence that they were building weapons of mass destruction. This violated the agreement signed by Iraq in 1991 where they promised this would not happen. The United States went against the United Nations in going to war. The United Nations voted against going to war with Iraq; the United States invaded against the UN?s wishes. The invasion did get Saddam Hussein out of power. He was captured and executed in December of 2006.

The war did have some success, but came at a price. Many lives were lost when it was not necessary. The war also had another cost: money. The war cost the United Kingdom approximately nine billion dollars. The United States has spent over eight hundred and forty five billion dollars on the war. The total cost in the US economy is estimated at between three to five trillion dollars.

Many of the countries who backed the United States at the beginning of the war have now retreated. The United States is the primary force in Iraq; they make up over half of the number of soldiers in the war.

The war has become a hot topic among potentials for the next president of the United States. The two democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are both promising troop withdrawls immediately upon them being sworn in. Republican front runner John McCain has no intentions of removing troops right away. He feels the United States should stay until Iraq is a more stable country.nahi:
