Sony Corp announced that it has developed an industrial storage battery with a capacity of 2.4kWh and will release it in September 2011.
When the battery, "ESSP-2000," is connected to an AC100V power outlet, it can be rapidly charged to 95% capacity in about two hours. It is suited for back-up power supply systems for emergency as well as systems that charge electricity during nighttime hours and discharge it during daytime hours to level electricity demand.






For the storage battery, Sony employed an olivine-type iron phosphate lithium ion (Li-ion) rechargeable battery. The Li-ion battery can be used for more than 10 years when it is charged and discharged once every day.
The new storage battery is equipped with six AC100V power outlets and can provide up to 1,000W of electricity. The battery can supply electricity to devices connected to it while it is being charged. It is also possible to set a timer for charging and discharging.
The storage battery measures 490 (W) x 610 (H) x 750mm (D) and weighs about 90kg. Its expected retail price is about ¥2 million (approx US$25,863).
