He said that the scientists at Dr.Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), Karachi University and those at Beijing Genomics Institute, China, have jointly mapped genome of a Pakistani living in Karachi. Dr.Iqbal Choudhary was talking to a group of scientists at the ICCBS, here on Monday.
He pointed out that the genome mapping was carried out in 10 months’ time while using a newly developed technology.

The research team comprised Dr.Kamran Azim, Assistant Professor in the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research and Dr.Yong Zhang, head of the genomics department at the Beijing Genomics Institute, Shenzhen, China.
The Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University, Prof. Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmi, termed this as a big achievement.

Dr. Shahana, who is also a molecular biologist, said that further studies in this area would help in genomic analysis, identify various chronic diseases and develop a proper strategy for their management.
She said that the feat has been achieved when Pakistan and China are celebrating 60th year of their diplomatic ties.
Projects in this area of science and technology would be of mutual benefit for our two countries, Dr. Shahana said.
