Campuses reopen today

THE public sector educational institutions across the province will reopen after annual summer vacation on Monday (today).
Though most of the private institutions will reopen in September after Eidul Fitr, a large number of private schools follow the government schedule. The Punjab government had announced reopening of schools on August 15. There were widespread speculations that the government might extend the summer break on the pressing demand of students, their parents and teachers till September, however, this could not happen.
It is pertinent to mention here that Punjab School Education Department had also opposed any move to extend the annual summer vacation in a summary moved to the Punjab chief minister.
The department had informed the CM that if the summer break was extended, the schools would be unable to complete academic year of 210 days which was mandatory under education calendar of the Punjab government. The Schools Department officials argued that there was no reason to extend summer break, adding that in Sindh province where weather was slightly hot as compared to Punjab, the schools had already opened after summer vacation on August 1. They also argue that the private schools not following the government schedule would face problems in connection with completion of 210 academic days as per the education calendar.
According to sources in the department, a controversy was likely to erupt over the summer vacation schedule as many private schools would not reopen on August 15. They informed that the department had not chalked out any plan to enforce the government’s notification.
EDO Education Lahore Pervaiz Akhtar, confirming reopening of schools from August 15 (today), said it was unfortunate that people were spreading rumours that the government had extended the summer vacation.
