Flood in Jeddah 7 Attachment(s) |
Jeddah Flood Ever since over 100 people were killed in a series of seemingly unnecessary floods in the Saudi city of Jeddah last week, the kingdom's top officials have been pointing lots of fingers at one another. Jeddah lacks a citywide municipal sewage system, instead relying on septic tanks, the contents of which are pumped into trucks and eventually dumped into Misk Lake. Saudi King Abdullah responded by setting up a high-level committee to investigate the Jeddah flood disaster, pledging to question officials all the way up to Jeddah's governor Prince Misha’l Bin Majed. The king also ordered that the family of each of the flood's victims, many of whom drowned or were crushed in cars, be compensated with one million Saudi riyals, about $267,000. "A lot of people died and no one can be immune from blame," Ahmed Al-Omran, an influential Saudi critic and blogger told The Media Line. "The king made it very clear that people who are responsible will be held accountable and if there is to be a real investigation into this, a lot of people will find themselves in trouble."
