Cloud-based DNS outperforms in-house systems

DNS Services Outsourcing can save minutes of downtime per day

A vendor-sponsored a new study of the 1,000 largest sites of third parties quantifies how much better managed service providers are doing running DNS services through the Internet cloud covering business critical network this service themselves.

U.S. Web sites that run their own DNS services available that the experience is lower - an average of a few minutes of downtime per day - compared with sites that outsource their DNS.

The study was conducted by ThousandEyes, which calculates the minimum, maximum and average DNS availability of 1000 Alexa Web sites during the second quarter of 2011. The study shows that in the United States managed service providers offer greater availability in the three categories, compared with U.S. companies. UU. internally managed DNS.

The study was commissioned by Verisign, which sells DNS managed services.
Networks dedicated to third

Web sites that use third party DNS management vendors experienced no overall cuts in the course of study, while self-management of landfill sites were shown to have a greater propensity to experience near total cuts.

Managed service providers offer higher availability, since they have more data center locations scattered across the Internet to respond to DNS queries to users. In addition, these providers use what is called a DNS resolution service, Anycast, which means there is always a server available somewhere to respond to DNS queries. The study identified a DNS provider that uses both unicast and anycast DNS resolution, providing the optimum combination of performance and reliability for DNS queries and responses.

"Few companies have the resources and expertise to set up these extensive systems for internally managed DNS," the study said. "This may explain the discrepancy and is an indication that most of the internally managed DNS companies would benefit from a secondary DNS managed service that can act as a backup to ensure traffic to their websites in case the primary DNS management tool is not available. "

Another reason others offer greater availability of its cloud-based services is that DNS can afford dedicated network engineers who specialize in DNS.

Two minutes of downtime, on average

"Common configuration errors," said Ben Petro, senior vice president of Network Intelligence Group Verisign and availability. "When companies use open source software such as BIND DNS is very easy to have a further problem is incorrect configuration on the side to exploit much of the world -.. Since 90% - use BIND, so you have to patch three or four times a month at least. Many times, companies end up with an unpatched version of BIND that is vulnerable to known attacks. "

The study showed that even a small reduction in the availability of web page can result in lost customers and revenue for e-commerce companies. For example, the average availability of internally managed DNS from U.S. websites was 99.84%, compared with 100% availability demanded by Verisign Managed DNS service. The difference of 0.16% in average availability results in about two minutes of downtime per day on average.

A form of e-retailer cited in the study said his business could lose $ 1,000 (£ 635) or more per minute of downtime, a figure that would be greater for major e-commerce sites. E-retailers are losing business because most online consumers leave websites when a page takes more than three seconds to load, and usually not return to a web page with disappointing results.

"The study shows that outsource DNS is a much more robust. The three major DNS providers offer 99% availability or better," said Petro. "We are going to parties, and this is the most important time of year for e-tailors. Most e-tailors make 40% to 50% of your business now. We are trying to foster awareness of this issue. "
