Sharp Corp announced the "Freestyle Aquos F5," an LCD TV that can be placed in various ways including being hung on a wall, Aug 25, 2011.The TV comes in four screen sizes: 60, 40, 32 and 20 inches. The 60-, 40- and 32-inch models come with the "Wall-mounting Slim Brace" for hanging them on a wall in addition to a normal TV stand.
"For the opening of the Aquos Chapter Two, we will propose a new value of freestyle instead of a TV used only for watching broadcast programs," Sharp said.

A usage example of the TVs

The display of the Freestyle Aquos F5 is separated from its tuner. The displays of the 60-, 40-, 32- and 20-inch models weigh approximately 21, 8.5, 5.5 and 2.5kg, respectively. The display of Sharp's former 32-inch LCD TV (LC-32E9) weighs about 8.9kg. So, the weight was reduced by about 40%.
This time, Sharp integrated the bezel of the LCD TV and that of the LCD panel module and used aluminum alloy as its material to reduce the weight of the product."We made the most of our vertically-integrated model for manufacturing panels to TVs," the company said.

Also, the company used an edge-lit LED backlight for the LCD panel module to reduce the thickness of the display.
For the transmission of video between the display and tuner, Sharp employed the "IEEE802.11n/a (5GHz band)" wireless LAN standard. The number of available channels is 19. And the company said, "It is possible to transmit video without any problem even if 10 units of the new product are placed in one room."
Because the tuner has not only an input terminal for digital broadcast but also a USB port and Ethernet port, it is possible to record digital broadcast programs in an external HDD and to connect to the Internet.
In 2008, Sharp commercialized an LCD TV that wirelessly transmits video between its display and tuner. Commenting on the difference between then and now, it said, "Space creation at home became more open, and more users request for free layout. And the technological development related to network, wireless device, LED backlight and weight reduction was advanced."

Sharp will release the 40- and 32-inch models Sept 15, 2011, and the 60- and 20-inch models Oct 28, 2011. The expected retail prices of the 60-, 40-, 32- and 20-inch models are about ¥380,000 (approx US$4,910), ¥150,000, ¥110,000 and ¥80,000, respectively. As for the ratio of the sales of the new products to that of the entire Aquos TVs, the company aims at 10% in the latter half of fiscal 2011 and 30% in fiscal 2012.
