Showa Denko K.K. started volume production of its 500-Gbyte 2.5-inch hard disk in July 2011.
The company claims that the hard disk has a higher capacity than any other 2.5-inch hard disks in the world. It defines the hard disk as the sixth-generation product, whose volume production started about one year after the volume production of the fifth-generation product began.
It is highly likely that the 500-Gbyte hard disk was employed for the 1-Tbyte 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) that Toshiba Corp announced Aug 2, 2011, though Showa Denko has not announced it. The two companies jointly established two development organizations for HDDs in July 16, 2011.
Showa Denko also announced that it completed the expansion of the production capacity of its manufacturing base in Singapore in June 2011 as scheduled. As a result, the total production capacity was increased to 27 million disks per month in July 2011.
