Angry The Five Worst Airports in the World

Delhi airport is Asia's worst!

According to an online survey, Delhi airport is Asia’s worst airport. A similar worldwide survey conducted by another agency, Priority Pass says London's Heathrow Airport is the worst airport in the world.

Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport has been picked up as second worst, followed by Los Angeles, Frankfurt airport and Miami airports.

On regional parameters, Tonga is said to be the worst airport in South-Pacific; Sanna, Yemen is the worst airport in the middle east; and Paris Charles de Gaulle, France is the worst airport in Europe. Apart from infrastructure issues, proneness to accident is one of the parameters on which these airports are ranked.

Given the backdrop of 2010 Commonwealth Games, Delhi must get its act together now. Singapore Changi, Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok and Amsterdam Schiphol are voted as the best airports in the world

Here is what makes these airports worst:

Airport 1: Delhi's IGI: Worst in Asia
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport has been in headlines for different reasons, such as airlines strike and flight delays. In June last year, a Ukrainian national was crushed by a bus as he was unloading his luggage at Delhi Airport. In the aftermath of the accident, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said that infrastructure at the domestic terminal does not support the facility for aerobridges. A plan to make 84 aerobridges at the International Terminal (T3) was put in place. These are scheduled to be *****ed by 2010. Aerobridges are chutes linking an aircraft to the departure or arrival terminal. Air travelers walk through these to board or get off a plane, and this ensures their on-ground safety. In a more recent mishap, strong winds and a heavy rainfall blew off part of the Delhi airport's Terminal 1D's roof. In another mishap, an employee of Delhi airport was injured when his hand got stuck in the conveyor belt due to malfunctioning of the electrical system. As a result of the malfunctioning, the aerobridge moved in a direction opposite to which it was to have moved, damaging the plane in the process.

American Air had to cancel the outbound flight from Delhi after the incident. In yet another incident last month, two firemen were killed and three others injured when the fire tender veered off its route and ran into a drain. The two firemen were testing a new, modern firefighting vehicle, which overturned after it fell into the storm water drain. The incident happened on the new runway where traffic has been banned by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation because of inconvenience of the residents in the localities nearby.

Airport 2: Heathrow: World's worst airport

The deteriorating services at Heathrow airport first made headlines way back in 1997, when many passengers reported delayed arrival of their luggage. The delay, says a media report, was by as much as eight days. British Airways, the airlines that reported delayed arrival of luggage then had said that the airline was reviewing the process by which bags were transferred at Heathrow Airport.

More recently, a major tragedy was averted at London's Heathrow Airport when a British Airways plane crash-landed short of a runway.

The emergency landing caused minor injuries to 13 people and caused delay and cancellation of several flights. Even Prime Minister Gordon Brown was left stranded at the airport for some time. Passengers had to escape through the emergency chutes after BA38 from Beijing made an emergency landing. The plane's wheels collapsed and doors were flown open when it crash-landed.

In June this year, check-in desks at the airport's terminal 5 reported technical snags with luggage conveyor belts, causing major disruptions. As many as 60 passengers had to wait and sleep at the airport. One baggage handler said there had been more than 1,000 pieces of luggage piled up, and described the situation as "absolute chaos".

Airport 3

Charles de Gaulle: Accident prone airport

The airport hit the headlines when an Air France airliner disappeared in the middle of the waters between Brazilian and African coasts. Bad weather was cited as the cause of accident. But there is more to what makes Charles de Gaulle airport among the worst airports in the world.

Among the issues frequent flyers have reported from the airport are bus journeys across the tarmac to distant planes, multiple flights leaving from the same gate, few accommodations for limited-mobility passengers and unhelpful employees.

The Paris airport had first made it to front page of the newspapers when a large part of the roof of a new terminal collapsed way back in 2004. Five people were killed in an accident that saw a 30-metre slab of concrete, metal and glass came crashing down onto a waiting area in the terminal soon after passengers had alerted police to cracks.

Airport 4

Los Angeles International Airport: Runway incursions

Los Angeles International Airport is being called the world's third worst airport in a poll of frequent fliers. The ranking comes after about 14,000 frequent fliers were surveyed online, and according to them, LAX is the second worst airport in the United States and the third worst in the world. It's one of the oldest, busiest and largest airports in the country. Frequent fliers cite poor facilities, dreaded traffic-congested loop and lack of power outlets as the key reasons for rating it world's worst. Travelers at LAX will have to wait until 2013 when a billion-dollar makeover is scheduled to be completes at one of the terminals.

Not long ago, LAX had reported many near-misses. In 2007, the airport recorded 21 incursions. Of these, two were serious episodes where a crash was barely averted.

Airport 5

Frankfurt Airport: Packed lifts, security areas

Overcrowded security areas, unclear signage, slow immigration and packed lifts are some of the complaints lodged by frequent fliers at Frankfurt Airport.

"Mention Frankfurt Airport to frequent fliers between Europe and the United States, and you are bound to hear about the rainbow tunnel, a subterranean tube illuminated by colored neon lights. It seems miles long and is punctuated by mountainous staircases at either end. There are two very slow elevators as alternatives to the stairs. The place is really annoying," said Walter Konkin, an American discussing woes at Frankfurt airport.
